Belfast has an array of monuments that distil the craft, innovation and ingenuity of its people and place. Despite the city’s illustrious heritage of rope manufacture, no sculpture yet exists that pays tribute to this tradition. The history and legacy of rope making in the immediate area of the Connswater was the catalyst behind our design proposal which seeks to encapsulate this nuanced and idiosyncratic activity - translating associated morphologies into a modern aesthetic that mimics a rope and spool to unite, engage and facilitate community interaction across a range of levels.
